Bokiri fires Bayelsa Queens into Fed Cup final


Bayelsa Queens progressed to the 2015 Federation Cup final after beating Confluence Queens 1-0 at the Oleh Township Stadium on Wednesday.

The two teams were both looking to book a place in this year’s final after impressive wins in previous rounds.

Bayelsa Queens nearly broke the deadlock in the 17th minute from an out-of-the-box free-kick.

However, in-form striker Yetunde Adeboyejo was unlucky as her effort painfully went inches off the post.

In the 24th minute, Confluence Queens striker Chioma Wogu was wasteful in front of goal when she should have put her side one goal up.

The next chance also went to the Wada Queens three minutes later, after some good display from Lola Philips on the left hand side, she set up his teammate Mariam Aluko whose header from close range failed to beat goalkeeper Alaba Jonathan.

Fans at the stadium applauded the perfect soccer artistry exhibited by the ladies on the field of play.

The entertaining first half failed to produce a goal as it ended 0-0.

The game resumed with the two teams raising the stakes as they searched for the opener.

In the 49th minute, Bayelsa Queens had the ball in the net but it was correctly ruled out for offside.

Confluence Queens goalkeeper Ruth Sunday made a fine save in the 64th minute, denying Adeboyejo from another free kick.

The forward thought the ball had ended at the back of the net but the Equatorial Guinea international amazingly scrambled it away.

Philips then struck the ball straight at Bayelsa Queens goalkeeper Alaba from a move she initiated in the 67th minute.

Nine minutes to the end of the match, Confluence Queens shot-stopper Sunday produced a brilliant save, pushing away Adeboyejo’s strike from range.

The opening goal of the match finally came in the 89th minute as Bayelsa Queens skipper Bokiri hit the the back of the net.

Confluence Queens late attacks proved futile, as Bayelsa Queens held on to their lead, and booked their place in this year’s Federation Cup final.
